We’re thrilled to announce our 2025 Grand Champion: Yanis Vasquez

Her winning piece, a vivid pop-art zombie brought to life with extraordinary precision and style, impressed our judges with its technique, storytelling, and visual impact.

In this interview, she shares her artistic journey, creative process, and the story behind her award-winning Halloween design.

👩🎨 Meet the Artist: Yanis Vasquez (@DarkArt_nay)

Q1: Congratulations on winning! Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in face painting?

Yanis:
I started doing makeup over seven years ago. At that time, my son was around three years old; I had recently become a mother and was working as a waitress. I wanted a change in my life and to dedicate myself to something I was truly passionate about. I had always loved makeup, so I decided to take an intensive course in social makeup.

Over time, I began creating more striking and fantastical looks, and I discovered that artistic makeup was my true passion. I loved bringing different characters to life with color and expression. At first, it was difficult because I didn't have any formal training, but with a lot of practice, watching tutorials, and taking courses, I managed to improve and develop my own style.

🧟♀️ The Inspiration Behind the Winning Look

Q2: What inspired the design you created for the Halloween contest?

Yanis:
I've always loved monsters, so I wanted to create a monstrously beautiful creature: a pop art zombie that was both terrifying and aesthetically pleasing. I wanted to blend darkness with allure — something different from what I usually do.

🎨 Inside Her Creative Process

Q3: Guide us through your process. What techniques or products did you rely on most?

Yanis:
First, I make a sketch, then I apply blocks of color and add details until I reach the final result. I used only body watercolors from the Chilean brand Quetzart and worked with an optical illusion technique using Aqua Color.

⚡ Challenges That Made the Art Stronger

Q4: Did you encounter any challenges while creating this design?

Yanis:
More than technical, the challenge was conceptual. I usually create more terrifying creatures, so making this one beautiful and harmonious, without losing my rock and dark style, was the most challenging part.

🌟 Her Favorite Part of the Look

Q5: What part of the look are you most proud of?

Yanis:
How aesthetically pleasing and balanced it is. I feel it perfectly reflects my essence: a touch of rock, dark, and attention to detail.

🖌️ Advice for Other Face & Body Painters

Q6: What advice would you give to other portrait painters?

Yanis:
Practice a lot, study, and don't give up. Mistakes are part of the process. Perseverance and passion are what truly make you grow as an artist.

📱 Follow Her Work

Q7: Where can people follow your creations?

Yanis:
On Instagram and TikTok as @DarkArt_nay, where I share my creations, tutorials, and courses.
