Aquaman, one of the characters in the long running DC Comics series, was never as well known as a lot of the other superheroes, like Superman. But with the release of the new movie this year that has changed. 

Being the son of an Atlantean princess and a lighthouse keeper, Aquaman is a real superhero. He is the king of all things aqua. He can breathe underwater, swim at tremendous speeds and communicate with sea life with telepathy.

On land he has superpowers too: a superhuman strength, enhanced senses and nearly impenetrable skin. These superhero powers make him the defender of Earth's oceans.

With this Aquaman mask every little boy can crawl into his skin and become a superhero too 😊.

Step 1: The base colors

Load a wide chisel brush with a mixture of regular orange and some neon orange and paint the top part of the mask. As an alternative you could also use Natalee Davies's Tigress split cake. This will give a very nice blended outline, but is a little bit less bright.

Load a 1/2# flat brush with the two darkest colors from the green split cake and paint the bottom part of the mask, keeping the darkest color on the outside. Create a nice shape on the sides to give it something extra. Next flip your brush and trace the green again, creating a dark green edge under the eyes too. Keep two little spaces free of paint on the nose, so you can add yellow later on.

Load the same flat brush with yellow and add Aquaman's 'sign' between the eyes, in the central focal point.

Load a regular sponge with magic blue on one side and light blue on the other side. Add a rounded shape on the forehead with a mixture of the two colors and add some texture on the edge with one of the graffiti madness stencils and light blue.

Step 2: Adding more texture

With the same sponge, loaded with a mixture of magic and light blue, add texture in the middle of the green parts of the mask (the highest, 'highlighted' parts).

Load two sponge daubers with gold paint. Use one exclusively for applying the facepaint and one for applying the glitter on top of the paint. Keep the gold glitter within reach, because you have to reload several times.

Take the scale stencil, keep it into place while applying the gold facepaint first, immediately followed by the gold glitter. Repeat this a few times so all the orange is covered with golden scales. 

As an alternative for the gold paint and loose glitter you could also use some chunky golden glitter directly on top of the orange 🙂!

Step 3: Prepping the trident and outlining

Add some Ad Gem at the back of a 'Trident' made of dimensional fabric paint.

Load a round brush #3 with regular black and outline the entire mask.

If you don't have a Trident to glue on the design, you can easily paint one on top of the mask. Either in black or gold, although the gold will probably need some shading lines or outlines for visibility.

Step 4: Blending, highlights and adding the trident

Use a Cameleon blending brush #1 or a small filbert brush to blend in some of the outlines and add some shading around the 'sign'. Moisten the clean brush on a wet wipe and go over the lines you want to blend or shade.

Add a few little highlights on the edges of the mask and on top of the yellow Aquaman 'sign'.

Final step is adding the trident. I didn't want the trident to overlap the 'sign'. My trident was a bit too long, so I glued the top part in place and cut off the extra at the top of the sign.

Additional:

Looking at pictures of Aquaman you see a lot of beautiful shapes on his outfit. In this design I chose to paint a very simple shape on the side of the mask, but you can change it in any way you like.
