Ahoy, matey! If you’re a professional face painter—or even just someone who loves bringing swashbuckling fun to parties—you know pirate face painting is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
From kids’ birthday parties to bustling festivals, pirates have it all: drama, character, and endless creative possibilities. But here’s the thing—traditional pirate designs often fall into the same trap: the dreaded black eye patch. Sure, it’s classic… but too often it ends up looking like your client just walked away from a fistfight, not a treasure hunt.
That’s why in our recent Facepaint.com webinar, hosted by Blake Cabot and featuring UK face painting pro Mara Zeggers, we explored three exciting pirate designs that move beyond the tired black patch:
-
Full Pirate Face (rugged and festival-ready)
-
Pirate Parrot Companion (colorful and full of personality)
-
Jolly Roger Skull (bold, graphic, and crowd-stopping)
Get ready for step-by-step breakdowns, pro tips, and product recommendations so you can paint pirates faster, better, and more creatively than ever before.

🎨 Why Upgrade Your Pirate Face Painting?
Pirate designs are timeless crowd favorites—but small mistakes can quickly take them from “Captain Jack Sparrow” to “Accident at Sea.” The most common issue? Overly dark eye patches that give a bruised look, especially on young kids.
In this webinar, Mara showed how color choices, shading, and creative alternatives can keep your pirates looking adventurous, not injured.
And because festival lines move fast, every design we cover can be adapted for 2–5 minute applications—perfect for high-volume events without sacrificing detail.
🏴☠️ Design #1: The Complete Pirate Face
The full pirate face is a festival essential. With a few pro techniques, you can add rugged character and depth in minutes.
🖌 Base Aging Technique:
-
Product used: Puppy Cake from Grace (a brown split cake with light and dark tones).
-
Apply the darker shade to inner eye corners, crow’s feet, and nose bridge to create a sun-weathered, aged look.
-
Lighter tones highlight the outer cheeks and forehead for contrast.
🖌 Contouring & Highlights:
-
Think of Halloween-style contouring: deepen the shadows and brighten the highlights to shape the face.
-
Adjust colors for different skin tones—warm browns for lighter skin, cooler tones for darker skin.
🖌 Eyebrows:
-
Use DFX black with a #5 brush.
-
Make them lower in the middle and higher at the outside edges to give a tough, angry expression.
🖌 Five O’Clock Shadow:
-
Use a dry stipple sponge with black paint for realistic stubble.
🖌 Facial Hair:
-
A curled mustache and goatee add instant pirate flair—make sure to keep visible brush strokes for hair texture.
🖌 Bandana:
-
Lava from Grace (red, orange, yellow split cake) with a flat brush.
-
Paint wavy lines, then add a side knot and dangling tails.
🖌 Optional Scar:
-
Use Deep Love (dark red) from Grace, outline with black, and add a white highlight for a realistic stitched wound.
🖌 Jolly Roger Forehead Detail:
-
A small skull and crossbones flag adds extra personality.
-
Use a white base, gray shading, and black outline.
⏱ Timing:
-
Experienced painters: 2–3 minutes for a basic pirate.
-
Add details for a more elaborate 5–6 minute version.
🦜 Design #2: Pirate Parrot Companion
Want to take your pirate design to the next level? Add a colorful parrot sidekick perched on the cheek or around the eye.
🖌 Base Structure:
-
Start with a DFX white circle for the parrot’s eye—place it slightly off-center to the right (or left, depending on face orientation).
🖌 Beak:
-
Use Glow (orange from Kois) to create a curved beak.
-
Pay attention to arch and connection for a natural look.
🖌 Hat:
-
Trill Cake (green split) for the pirate hat above the eye.
-
Curve it to follow the brow line for realism.
🖌 Wings & Feathers:
-
Green base feathers.
-
Add blue teardrops between feathers for depth and dimension.
🖌 Finishing Details:
-
Orange claws (three teardrops each foot).
-
Yellow hat trim.
-
Black outlining for definition.
-
Small pink tongue detail for personality.
⏱ Timing:
-
More detailed than a basic pirate—best for slower-paced events or premium designs.
💀 Design #3: Jolly Roger Skull
For bold, graphic impact, nothing beats a Jolly Roger skull.
🖌 Skull Base:
-
Use fluorescent green for a unique twist (or white for a classic version).
-
Square shape with high cheekbones and a dramatic jaw.
🖌 Bandana:
-
Pink diagonal scarf with a knot, created using the dot and two-stroke technique.
🖌 Shading:
-
Blue shadows under the jaw and cheekbones for depth.
-
Use a filbert brush for smooth blending.
🖌 Details:
-
Black outline with a #2 brush.
-
Add an eye patch to one side, a creepy open eye on the other.
-
White highlights on the teeth for dimension.
🖌 Optional Pop:
-
Add an orange outline to make the design stand out even more at festivals.
